This page concentrates on retail businesses within the City of Portsmouth that cater specifically for those with a genuine interest in quality beer and associated products such as traditional cider.
SPECIALIST BOTTLE SHOPS
Not just your usual street corner off-license or convenience store, but shops that cater specifically for lovers of fine ales and traditional ciders from small independent producers. These sort of stores are owned and run by individuals who have a vast knowledge of the products they sell – and, more often than not, have numerous industry contacts to enable them to source the best lines from around the UK and abroad.

This shop, located in the heart of Southsea’s cosmopolitan Albert Road was opened in March 2017 by the former licensees of the multi-award winning Leopold Tavern, situated a short distance to the east.
The shelves here are stocked with an array of ales and ciders from across the UK and beyond – virtually all of which are not available anywhere else in Portsmouth. Expect to find products from the latest generation of cutting-edge brewers, including perennial favourites, rare bottlings and collaborative brews. Products are sold in both bottle and can, with the range constantly changing. Also in situ is a ‘growler station’ where customers can purchase take-out draught key-keg brews. Keep an eye on the company’s Facebook page for all the latest information regarding new stock.
Portsmouth has seen a resurgence of interest in the craft of home brewing in recent years, with local brewing club meetings taking place in the city on a regular basis, giving the opportunity for like-minded individuals to swap ideas, learn new skills and sample one another’s products. In fact some of Portsmouth’s current commercial breweries have been founded by keen home brewers who have decided to take their hobby to a new level and make it their day job too. Indeed, Portsmouth’s longest-established brewery, Irving & Co collaborates annually with Southsea based organization Strong Island to host a home brewers’ competition, whereby the lucky winner gets to have their recipe produced commercially at the Farlington brewery.

Central to the home brewing community in the city is Southsea-based company GetBrewing.uk, who offer a comprehensive service to anyone wishing to produce beer on a small scale. As well as stocking a large selection of raw materials, this friendly, family-run business also supplies a wide range of brewing equipment and sundries, with everything from crown bottle caps to top-of-the-range Grainfather brewing systems.
For those without the space or time to brew their own ale at home, GetBrewing also offers the chance for individuals, or groups of friends, to participate at an in-store brew day, with the opportunity to create a beer to the style of their chosing, following the whole process through until it is ready to drink when returning to site 10-14 days later to either bottle or keg the freshly-fermented product (see website for full details).
For those preferring a drink from the grape and not the grain, GetBrewing also stocks plenty of essentials for the amateur wine maker, as well as cider kits, spirit-related products and even kits for those who have a liking for cheese!
Those wishing to learn more about the art of home brewing can chose from a wide range of books that are available to purchase from the store.
