  • 25th May 2018 – All seems set to change at the Golden Eagle, Delamere Road, soon. Sadly, no mention is made with regards to maintaining high quality cask beers at the pub. Read the News article here.
  • 20th May 2018 – The Compass Rose, Sywell Crescent, recently reopened as Chester’s Steakhouse – the first bar in Portsmouth to not accept cash payments (cards only accepted).
  • 16th Apr 2018 – The Thatched House, Locksway Road, has been bought by Greene King and is currently closed for refurbishment. It is planned to reopen on 27th April.
  • 13th Feb 2018 – Portsmouth’s latest pub, the Merchant House, Highland Road, has opened today.
  • 2nd Feb 2018 – The Lawrence Arms, Lawrence Road, has been named 2018 Portsmouth & South East Hants CAMRA Pub of the Year.
  • 1st Feb 2018 – The Study, Spring Street, is being remodelled and shall reopen as the Blind Tiger – a ‘speakeasy bar and grill’, whatever that is!
  • 29th Jan 2018 – Emporium Bar, Elm Grove, is to reopen following refurbishment on February 2nd.
  • 29th Jan 2018 – Shack Bar & Kitchen, Albert Road, appears to have ceased trading.
  • 29th Jan 2018 – The Painter’s Arms, Lake Road, has now reopened.
  • 24th Jan 2018 – The Yorkshire Grey, Guildhall Walk, shall be doubling its range of cask ales from four to eight beers, as from early February. Expect beers from small brewers, both local and further afield.
  • 24th Jan 2018 – Porters, Albert Road, shall soon begin serving cask beer from Staggeringly Good Brewery.
  • 7th Jan 2018 – Huis, Elm Grove, has plans to increase its draught beer range to allow the sale of more guest beers.
  • 7th Jan 2018 – Emporium Bar, Elm Grove, is presently closed for a major refit.
  • 22nd Dec 2017 – The proposed conversion of the RMA Tavern looks likely to be refused, due to objections from (among others) the city’s Highways Engineer. More information here.
  • 11th Dec 2017 – The name of the new craft beer bar due to open on the site of the former Ice Bar has been revealed to be The Merchant House. Follow the bar’s progress here.
  • 4th Dec 2017 – The King Street Tavern, Norfolk Street, has been given planning permission to create a first floor drinking and dining room above the present bar.
  • 1st Dec 2017 – Hilsea’s Urban Island Brewing Co opens its new tap room on 2nd December. The bar shall then operate the following hours each week: Thu 16:00 ’til 19:00; Fri 12:00 ’til 18:00: Sat 13:00 ’til 16:00.
  • 17th Nov 2017 – The short-lived Ice Bar, Highland Road, shall be reopening as a craft beer bar under the stewardship of former Leopold Tavern licensee, Stuart Ainsworth. It is hoped that the refurbished premises shall open in February.
  • 10th Nov 2017 – London brewer Fuller Smith & Turner has named the Old Customs House, Gunwharf Quays as its 2017 Pub of the Year.
  • 8th Nov 2017 – Little Johnny Russell’s, Albert Road, is presently closed for refurbishment. On reopening, it shall revert to its correct name, the Lord John Russell.
  • 31st Oct 2017 – The Fleet, King Henry I Street, now sells three hand-pulled ciders alongside three cask beers. It is planned to soon stock one local ale, with another changing beer sourced nationally and with Sharp’s Doom Bar Bitter being the permanent fixture.
  • 28th Oct 2017 – The Painters Arms, Lake Road, is facing a revocation of its licence due to a series of violent incidents at the pub. A decision is due to be made on 31st October. More information here.
  • 26th Oct 2017 – The Gaiety Bar, South Parade Pier, shall reopen this weekend and will be operating ‘pub hours’ – ie, not open solely for events. General opening times shall be 11am to 11pm.
  • 25th Oct 2017 – The Mr Pickwick, Milton Road, is due to close permenantly on 30th October.
  • 23rd Oct 2017 – Objections to the conversion of the RMA Tavern, Cromwell Road, outnumber letters of support by 20 to 1. A decision regarding the redevelopment is still awaited.
  • 23rd Oct 2017 – An application to demolish the former Camden pub and adjacent buildings, Queen Street, has been withdrawn.

  • 20th Oct 2017 – The Coach & Horses, London Road, has undergone a £300,000 refit.
  • 12th Oct 2017 – Conditional permission has been granted for the conversion of part of the former Swan pub, High Street, Cosham, to shop units.
  • 20th Sep 2017 – The planning application to convert the Jameson Arms, Church Road, to five flats has been withdrawn. More information here.
  • 11th Sep 2017 – A planning application has been submitted to convert the Battle of Minden, St Mary’s Road, to six homes. Details may be viewed here.
  • 11th Sep 2017 – A planning application has been submitted to convert the former Swan public house, High Street, Cosham, to retail premises. Details may be viewed here.
  • 6th Sep 2017 – The Beer Musketeer off-licence is due to open a micropub at the rear of the shop, hopefully in late September.
  • 6th Sep 2017 – The Leopold Tavern, Albert Road, is presently closed for an internal refit – and is reported to be reopening as a ‘sports bar’.
  • 24th Aug 2017 – After many years of undergoing numerous name changes and various companies abusing what used to be a lovely old pub, The Yorkshire Grey is at last returning to Portsmouth! Admiral Taverns is reopening the pub, at 25 Guildhall Walk, tomorrow – Friday 25th August. Good news
  • 16th Aug 2017 – The Royal Marine(s) Artillery Tavern, Cromwell Road, is to close in November. A planning application has been submitted for the conversion of the pub to six flats. View the application here.
    This would appear to be another local victim of the sell off of Fuller’s tenanted estate.
    11th Aug 2017 – Planning permission is being sought to demolish the former Brewers Arms on Milton Road. The application may be viewed here.
  • 10th Aug 2017 – The Fifth Hants Volunteer Arms, Albert Road, has reopened with a new tenant at the helm.

  • 23rd Jun 2017 – Southsea’s latest pub, the Southsea Village, opened today on the site of the former Owens, Palmerston Road. Full review shall follow soon on the main pub pages.
  • 23rd Jun 2017 – The Leopold Tavern, Albert Road, has undergone another change of licensee, which has sadly led to a reduction of the cask beer sold. Just two beers are no offered, with no local breweries represented. A sorry state of affairs.
    7th Jun 2017 – The Invincible, Wickham Street, presently has its freehold for sale via Savills. The pub may be sold off for alternative use.
  • 6th Jun 2017 – Owens, Palmerston Road, is presently undergoing a major refit, prior to reopening as The Southsea Village – an independent beer house and eaterie.
  • 6th Jun 2017 – The Old House at Home, Locksway Road, has reopened following refurbishment. The pub now offers an increased choice of cask beers, with local breweries being supported.
  • 23rd May 2017 – The Golden Eagle, Fawcett Road, is presently undergoing an external refurbishment.
  • 22nd May 2017 – The Fifth Hants Volunteer Arms, Albert Road, is due to close on Sunday 28th May due to the early departure of the incumbent licensees, who have been unable to make the pub a viable business. The future of the pub is therefore uncertain.
  • 11th May 2017 – The Admiral Drake, Kingston Crescent, is presently on the market (freehold) via RightMove estate agents.
  • 11th May 2017 – The Victory, The Hard, reopens on Friday 12th May at noon. See the pub’s Facebook page for details.
  • 5th May 2017 – The Golden Hind, Copnor Road, is presently closed for a refit and is due to reopen on 12th May.
  • 5th May 2017 – Both the Leopold Tavern and the Milton Arms have reopened today following a period of closure.
  • 5th Apr 2017 – The Tap, London Road, is temporarily closed following the departure of the licensee. Punch Taverns shall reopen the pub once a replacement is appointed.
  • 31st Mar 2017 – The Lawrence Arms, Lawrence Road, has been named 2017 Portsmouth & South East Hampshire CAMRA Cider Pub of the Year.
  • 30th Mar 2017 – Major refurbishment work is now well underway at the Sallyport Hotel, High Street.
  • 28th Mar 2017 – The Still & West Country House, Bath Square, reopens today after an extensive refit.
  • 26th Mar 2017 – Brewhouse & Kitchen (White Swan), Guildhall Walk, has opened a rooftop beer garden to the rear of the pub.
  • 24th Mar 2017 – The Southsea Brewery, Southsea Castle, reopens its bar/shop for the Spring & Summer season on Saturday 25th March – from noon ’til 4pm. Beers available on tap, in bottle and in minikeg to take away.
  • 23rd Mar 2017 – The Churchillian, Portsdown Hill Road, has reopned following an extensive refurbishment. See the pub’s entry on this site for the fully updated review.
  • 22nd Mar 2017 – Huis, Elm Grove, has today announced that it shall cease its restaurant service on 5th April for the foreseeable future, due to the financial impact caused by a series of recent break-ins and thefts. The business shall continue to trade as a bar.
  • 20th Mar 2017 – The Lady Hamilton, The Hard, shall be introducing a new version of the pub’s former dining menu – cooked by the same kitchen staff – from 11th April. This shall include, from 16th April, the pub’s very popular Sunday roasts.
  • 19th Mar 2017 – It has been announced today that the Milton Arms is the latest victim of the barbaric business policies of Enterprise Inns. The pub and barn shall be closing on 16th April. The future of the pub is therefore uncertain and subject to a new lessee being found.
  • 18th Mar 2017 – The owners of Jags@119, Elm Grove, have plans to extend the bar counter to the front of the building and add a further six beer taps, to bring the total to ten. It is hoped to stock beers from local microbreweries alongside the four BrewDog beers already on offer.
  • 13th Mar 2017 – Fuller’s has apparently offloaded the Brewers Arms, Milton Road, to an unknown buyer. It is rumoured that the pub shall either be demolished or converted for housing.
  • 12th Mar 2017 – The Florist, Fratton Road, has now reopened. No cask ale is yet offered, though three beer engines suggest that it shall be introduced before long.
  • 12th Mar 2017 – The former Camden public house, Queen Street, is under threat of demolition following the submission of a planning application to construct a seven storey Premier Inn on the site. Full details here.
  • 10th Mar 2017 – The Fort Cumberland Arms, Eastney Road, has now reopened and is due to reintroduce cask ale soon.
  • 9th Mar 2017 – The former licensees of the Leopold Tavern have today opened their new, specialist bottle shop, The Beer Musketeer, at 112 Albert Road, Southsea.
  • 9th Mar 2017 – The Churchillian, Portsdown Hill Road, is presently closed for refurbishment.
  • 1st Mar 2017 – The Still & West Country House, Bath Square, is now closed for a major refurbishment.
  • 28th Feb 2017 – The Sallyport Hotel, High Street, is now sadly back on the market after the previous developers withdrew from the project due to planning issues. Savills is now inviting offers for the building.
  • 28th Feb 2017 – The tenancy of the Golden Eagle, Fawcett Road, is available via McCoy’s pub brokers.
  • 27th Feb 2017 – The inn sign of the Brewers Arms, Milton Road, has been removed, along with the ‘business opportunity’ board that has been displayed on the frontage for the past year or so.
  • 25th Feb 2017 – The lastest casualty of Enterprise Inns looks to be the ABarBistro, White Hart Road. Rumour has it that EI Group has slapped a huge rent increase upon the operators of this popular bistro and wine merchant, forcing the lessees to vacate the building soon.
  • 25th Feb 2017 – The Florist, Fratton Road and the Fort Cumberland Arms, Eastney Road, are both due to reopen in mid March. More details to follow in due course.

  • 22nd Feb 2017 – Fuller Smith & Turner has been granted listed building consent to refurbish the exterior of the Still & West County House, Bath Square. View the pub’s new look here.
  • 21st Feb 2017 – The city council has granted a licence for a specialist Bottle Shop, The Beer Musketeer, to open at 112 Albert Road. The business shall be owned by the outgoing licensees of the nearby Leopold Tavern.
  • 19th Feb 2017 – Following the shock closure of the Leopold Tavern this weekend, another popular Southsea local may now be under threat due to the actions of owner EI Group (Enterprise Inns) – The licensee of the Phoenix, Duncan Road, is due to meet EI in a couple of weeks time to discuss a pending rent increase.   • 17th Feb 2017 – The Vaults, Albert Road, has launched a new house beer, Hop Rod, brewed exclusively for the pub by the Staggeringly Good Brewery.
  • 17th Feb 2017 – Al’Burrito Bar, Albert Road, has announced that it shall be leaving the premises soon. It’s last trading day will be Saturday 25th February. The company’s eaterie in Cosham shall continue trading and the owners are now looking for a new premises for a bar/restaurant.
  • 17th Feb 2017 – The Lady Hamilton, The Hard, has now reopened following a lengthy period of closure and a subsequent extensive refit. Full review to appear in the main listings soon.
  • 15th Feb 2017 – The former Old Vic, St Paul’s Road, is soon to reopen as a Lebanese restaurant.
  • 14th Feb 2017 – Licensees Stuart & Mandy Ainsworth of Portsmouth’s current CAMRA Pub of the Year, the Leopold Tavern, Albert Road, have announced today that they are quitting the pub due to an excessive rent increase imposed by owner Enterprise Inns. Their final day at the helm shall be Sunday 19th February. We wish them all the best in their future ventures.

  • 10th Feb 2017 – As of Saturday 11th February, the Fleet, King Henry I Street, will offer a 10% discount on cask ales, on production of a valid CAMRA membership card.
  • 9th Feb 2017 – Signs of life have been reported at the presently-closed Brewers Arms, Milton Road.

  • 9th Feb 2017 – The application to convert the upper storeys of the former Trafalgar pub, Edinburgh Road, has since been withdrawn.
  • 9th Feb 2017 – Listed Building consent has been granted to convert the first and second floors of the former Old Vic, St Paul’s Road, into a seven bedroom house.

  • 1st Feb 2017 – The City Council has recently received a planning application to convert the upper storeys of the former Scott’s Bar (latterly Kitsch n’ d’Or) into six private dwellings. This includes the retention of a cafe/restaurant on the ground floor. However, the application is unlikely to succeed, at it includes a wish to construct a second floor extension to the building, which lies in a conservation area. Full details here.
  • 1st Feb 2017 – The Portsmouth & South East Hampshire branch of the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) has named the Leopold Tavern, Albert Road, its 2017 Pub Of The Year, with Staggeringly Good Beer taking the prize for 2017 Brewery Of The Year.
  • 23rd Jan 2017 – Planning permission is being sought to open a specialist ‘bottle shop’ at 112 Albert Road, Southsea. The Beer Muskateer plans to offer the largest selection of beers in South East Hampshire, with products from around the world.
  • 22nd Jan 2017 – The Eldon Arms, Eldon Street has reopened with a new manager at the helm.
  • 15th Jan 2017 – A new pub/bar, Dixie’s, has opened at 58c High Street, Cosham, by the former licensee of the now-closed Swan.
  • 11th Jan 2017 – Staggeringly Good Brewery, Rodney Road, has launched a new house beer, Hole In Time, exclusively for the Hole In The Wall, Great Southsea Street.
  • 11th Jan 2017 – A planning application has been submitted to the City Council to convert the upper floors of the former Trafalgar pub, Edinburgh Road, to student halls of residence. The application includes plans to open a new public house on the ground floor.
  • 9th Jan 2017 – The Battle of Minden, St Mary’s Road, looks likely to close for the final time on 28th January.
